Shadow Circus

Shadow Circus was formed in 2006 in New Jersey when guitarist/keyboardist John Fontana set out to record demos to use as a calling card for session gigs. When the music caught the ear of vocalist David Bobick, he insisted that the music be fully realized with a complete band. With John’s background in classical and rock, and Dave’s degree in musical theater, the two set out to form a unique band that would be just as rocking as it would be progressive, and embrace the aspect of entertaining live performance that they felt had been lost since the genre’s heyday in the 70’s. The band’s name and first song was inspired by Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes, which would be the first of many literary references in their work, and Shadow Circus was born.

In 2007, the band released their debut, Welcome to the Freakroom, which was met with accolades from critics and fans alike. Featuring songs such as the aforementioned eponymous track, and “Journey of Everyman”, a 12-minute opus inspired by the epic fantasy novel The Talisman, the band quickly established themselves in the international prog community as a unique new group, with a distinctly symphonic and rocking sound.

The band immediately went back into the studio to begin work on the follow-up. More than two years in the making, Whispers and Screams, released in late 2009, features the ambitious 34-minute suite “Project Blue”, inspired by the Stephen King epic novel, The Stand, and the Twilight Zone homage “Willoughby”, which has become a fan favorite and staple at live shows. Shadow Circus’ appearance at the 2010 Progday festival cemented their reputation as an exciting and original band in the American progressive rock scene.

The band, now signed to 10T Records, has just released their third and most ambitious CD, On a Dark and Stormy Night. Once again drawing upon literary inspiration, the new release is a concept album inspired by Madeleine L’Engle’s classic science fantasy novel, A Wrinkle in Time. This release is widely considered the band’s best and most ambitious release to-date, earning critical praise and an exponentially growing following.

The Sound of Edensong

What words define the Edensong sound? Even a term as unwieldy as “epic orchestral progressive acoustic metal-infused rock” does little to categorize Edensong’s music.

Edensong draws deeply from classic symphonic progressive acts, with complex song structures that resemble those of early Genesis or Yes, but Edensong does not simply rehash the music from this Golden Age of prog rock. Edensong experiments with wide-ranging musical styles, adding orchestral instruments like flute, violin and cello into the mix of a versatile hard rock band. With what other act would you hear heavy metal guitar riffs, a classical guitar, flute and cello chamber trio, a full church organ, and North Indian tabla playing all in the span of a single album?

Edensong’s music can be as serenely melodic as the music of Simon and Garfunkel and Cat Stevens, or as aggressive as that of Metallica or Opeth. Not even Jethro Tull (another important influence for the band) is quite as eclectic. Using sophisticated and unpredictable compositions, not unlike the large scale works of Dream Theater or Rush, Edensong’s music tells a story, at times attaining the epic feel of the scores of Hans Zimmer or Nobuo Uematsu, while at others achieving a “folkier” simplicity, a singer/songwriter sound that might be more reminiscent of Billy Joel or The Beatles.

Edensong gains inspiration from many styles and eras of music, whether it be from the millennium-long history of Western classical music or the past half-century of rock. While influenced by so many from Gregorian chant to grunge, Edensong rejects any superficial trend in pop music and instead forges its own path through the droves of homogenous sound-alike acts. Edensong, along with a handful of other new bands, such as The Mars Volta, Coheed and Cambria, Three, and Dredg among others, attempts to creatively revitalize rock music in a movement away from the corporately-constructed “mainstream” and toward artist-driven freedom and true originality.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

The History of Edensong

The modern day Edensong was formed in 2008, in the months following the release of the band’s debut album “The Fruit Fallen,” but the band name and music date back to an earlier time…

The year was 2002 and it was a crisp autumn afternoon in the quaint New England hamlet of Middletown, Connecticut when James, a 19 year old college music major sat down for lunch with some friends at his favorite Mexican restaurant. James spent his nights entertaining otherwise occupied audiences as they sipped double-shot-half-caf-vegan lattes and studied for their upcoming “Gender Archaeology” final with his own blend of progressive rock infused acoustic folk, and an occasional Cat Stevens or Jethro Tull cover, but he was growing evermore nostalgic for the days when he could don his leather pants and rock out with his high school prog-metal band Echoes of Eden. He expressed this sentiment to his friend (we’ll refer to him here as “Tony“, because that’s actually his name), who sat across from him at lunch. The conversation went a little like this:

“I want to put on a crazy rock show at Welseyan!”

To which Tony replied “Yes, that sounds great. We could cover the venue in Astroturf and rent an above-ground pool to fill with dry ice, so the show would look mysterious and the band could go swimming afterwards. We could pose the audience members to look like trees and give them lines to recite”

James seconded his ideas and added “Yes, and we could add a choir and African drumming ensemble, an original accompanying film, and hold it all together with an obscure, barely comprehensible plotline depicted by a cast of actors.”

Luckily, Wesleyan University was just the right strange and eclectic place to mount such a show and “Beyond Eden” was performed in spring 2003, with a grant from the school. The show, half avant-garde brilliance and half complete disaster, did yield at least one important and lasting result: The formation of the show’s house band, which later became known as Edensong.

With music inspired by the breadth of the school’s music curriculum, embracing western classical, experimental, and world music traditions, mixed with James’s own somewhat guilty passion of progressive rock, Edensong continued to perform in Connecticut, and later in New York, when the band relocated after graduation. The tumultuous early years saw many members come and go, some of whom went on to pursue careers in dentistry, veterinary medicine, film-making, and one who left to form the popular indie rock band MGMT.

Edensong’s “The Fruit Fallen”, a collection of James’s songs dating back to 2000 and recorded by various incarnations of the band between 2004-2007, was released in 2008 to critical acclaim in the progressive rock, metal and AOR world. The album’s success led to an invitation to play Pittsburgh’s Three Rivers Prog festival. James accepted without hesitation, but unfortunately also without an actual band, as Edensong had ceased playing live in 2006 after a dispute over a planned US tour. So, with heightened dedication and a little bit of luck, James began to assemble the new Edensong.

Edensong 2.0 began with the addition of keyboardist Stefan Paolini, James’s acquaintance from a youth choir many years before (the two bonded over a Dream Theater t-shirt and vowed to work together on some distant day). Stefan dragged his good friend Barry Seroff, Connecticut based composer and flutist with an aversion to all things “prog”, kicking and screaming into the fold (within a matter of months, Barry decided that Edensong wasn’t so bad after all, even declaring once after a show of the progressive rock audience “These are my people!”). After an initial struggle to fill the bassist role, the band was reunited with the mysterious TD Towers, who played bass on “The Fruit Fallen”; after years of no communication with the band, he showed up at James’s doorstep one evening at midnight equipped with his bass and a basket of raspberries proclaiming simply, “I have what you need.” Another reunion, this time on the stage of the Three Rivers Festival, reunited James with his former high school bandmates from Echoes of Eden, including drummer Tony Waldman, fresh from a four year stay in Japan, who has since become a full time member of Edensong, thus rounding out the full lineup.

The current Edensong lineup brings together professional musicians of many backgrounds, each with a unique set of influences, creative sense, and innate strengths, but united in their collaborative goal to bring Edensong’s dark blend of thoughtful orchestral rock music into the world.

Edensong is currently in the studio finalizing work on a new album. This is the band’s first time performing on the NJ Proghouse stage and the band’s first public performance since late 2010. The band is excited to debut some brand new material and play some old favorites as well.

The Flower Kings to release thier new studio album ‘Desolation Rose’ late October!

September 12, 2013 By NJProghouse

tfk_desolationrose

Swedish progressive-rock royalty The Flower Kings have had a busy year since regrouping in 2012 for the ‘Banks Of Eden’ album, and with a new creative vigor the band are following that with the fantastic new album ‘Desolation Rose’ due out on 28th October 2013. The artwork, once again created by Silas Toball, can be viewed above and the band had this to say about the forthcoming release:

“Being somewhat of a political statement, the epic theme of “Desolation Rose” is a logical step in a time where perpetual war, famine, environmental threats, religious conflicts dominate the media and our minds. This is a time to wake up and the music on this album takes you on a journey where you are forced to questions what the mainstream media feed us and to rethink your whole world view on all of the above. This is in many ways a typical Flower Kings album but we have also taken it into another realm where we do take chances and where you may struggle to get into the music – or the lyrics – but trust me when I say that you will be rewarded, as this may be our most involved, important and interesting album ever.” (Roine Stolt – Sept 2013)

The track-listing for the album is as follows:

  1. Tower ONE 13:39
  2. Sleeping Bones 04:16
  3. Desolation Road 04:00
  4. White Tuxedos 06:30
  5. The Resurrected Judas 08:24
  6. Silent Masses 06:17
  7. Last Carnivore 04:22
  8. Dark Fascist Skies 06:05
  9. Blood Of Eden 03:12
  10. Silent Graveyards 02:52

Earlier this year, The Flower Kings embarked on a very special tour alongside Neal Morse & Mike Portnoy to celebrate InsideOutMusic’s 20th Anniversary, playing to sold out crowds across Europe and the US.

Tom Brislin joins Homecoming Weekend 2013!

September 4, 2013 By NJProghouse

We are pleased to announce that performing between sets during Homecoming Weekend will be Tom Brislin!

TB

http://www.tombrislin.com

“From a young age, I always knew that I would be a musician. While I was fortunate to have a clear sense of purpose early on, other decisions proved to be elusive. I loved so many types of music. I enjoyed writing songs and playing for other artists as well. Rather than choose one path, I just immersed myself in nearly every musical opportunity I could find myself in. Inevitably, the time came when I had to dig deep, put myself in a new environment, and create an album that reflected the different directions I’ve been pulled towards, both in music and in life.”

Tom Brislin is a musician, songwriter, and producer. After worldwide touring and recording on keyboards with several notable rock and pop artists, Tom relocated to Nashville, Tennessee from his native New Jersey to write and record his debut solo album, Hurry Up and Smell the Roses. The album, which Brislin describes as “Cinematic Pop”, was released in Fall 2012.

Hurry Up and Smell the Roses was written, produced, performed, and recorded by Brislin. The album features guest contributions from guitarist and platinum songwriter Clint Lagerberg, vocalist Annie Haslam of Renaissance, and Theremin synthesist Shueh-li Ong.

Influenced by his older siblings’ classic rock record collections, his parents’ love of jazz and classical music, and his own discovery of synth-laden pop, Brislin would eventually find himself performing in all of these settings. He has toured and recorded with Yes, Meat Loaf, Debbie Harry, Renaissance, Camel, Glen Burtnik, Francis Dunnery, and was the founder, lead singer and songwriter for the band Spiraling.

Music review site Babysue.com proclaims: “Hurry Up And Smell The Roses is a slick album chock full of intelligent compositions that shine a spotlight on this man’s unique gift for writing memorable melodies and smart pensive lyrics. He’s a master craftsman with arrangements…and he’s got a voice that’s absolutely fantastic.”

simakDialog

http://simakdialog.com

simakDialog
The internationally-renowned, critically-acclaimed progressive jazz ensemble, simakDialog, has been crafting their unique amalgam of modern progressive jazz, psychedelia, avant garde, fusion, world music and native musical dialects for over 20 years. Founded in 1993, in Jakarta, Indonesia, and led by the brilliant keyboardist and composer, Riza Arshad, the group has reached a jazz “cult” status, of sorts, in a country known throughout the centuries for its rich cultural and artistic heritage.
Augmented by the world-class guitar stylings of Tohpati (a band leader and MoonJune Records recording artist, himself), the fabulous bass work of well-known and -respected veteran Adhithya Pratama, and the intricate, interwoven rhythmic layers of three superb percussionists — Endang Ramdan, Erlan Suwardana, and newest member, Cucu Kurnia — simakDialog are a band that has continued to steam through uncharted waters since their inception. Their five albums (with a forthcoming sixth on the very near horizon!) reflect a continued progression of music that looks and reaches to the future, while being highly cognizant of the immediate present, yet still reverencing musical traditions which date back thousands of years.

The simakDialog is a musical conversation, every bit as unpredictable as it is captivating and enthralling. The sensitive, artful approach they employ has earned them prestigious music awards in Indonesia, and, more recently, recognition and accolades on a much larger platform.

Arshad’s keyboards and writing are phenomenal: frequently reminding listeners of a number of progressive jazz’s most innovative and revered players. The influence of storied, legendary icons from its more formative years (names such as Zawinul, Corea and Mays spring to mind) is visible, while the work still reflects his profoundly original and contemporary signature qualities.

Tohpati’s extragant, ever-searching fretboard excursions provide, alternatively, the perfect compliment, departure or contrast to Riza’s silky chording. Despite his decidedly adventurous approach, the unpretentious guitar work of Tohpati is never anything less than highly-polished, brilliant and confidently enunciated.

Both featured players draw from respective tonal palettes that are superb. Arshad’s keys are always buoyant, yet warm and ever respectful of the moment. His Fender Rhodes sounds are creamy and elegant, as good as it gets, while Tohpati routinely reminds listeners of the appetite and voracity of a Hendrix, McLaughlin, Rypdal or Fripp, with equally-compelling, -robust guitar voicings. The two contrasting sounds and styles often serve to create enthralling musical tensions, producing progressive music that is brimming with intrigue and powered by genius in its most fertive, spontaneous state.

The band are propelled by an unusual drivetrain, without the presence of a conventional drummer. This does not hamper proceedings in the least, as their three percussionists function with the poise, grace and perfect sychronization of a lavish, precision Swiss timepiece.

simakDialog are eccentric: having an understanding and fluency in native cultural music forms (with gamelan, perhaps the most noteable influence), yet profoundly articulate on a more far-reaching scale — enunciating with strength and conviction, on whatever musical ground they care to tread. With a mastery of diverse stylings and an expansive range of influences from which they draw inspiration, their work presents itself as an exotic, intoxicating and tantalizingly-quirky musical blend. Echoes of towering progressive jazz pillars, such as Weather Report, Pat Metheny Group and early incarnations of Chick Corea’s Return To Forever, effortlessly dance before your ears.

But that only begins to describe matters; theirs is a special sonic concoction which truly defies categorization. To call it “progressive jazz” might be accurate (they have been previously described as “a retro, free fusion jazz outfit”), to a large degree, were one forced to narrow it down to a single label. But that would be selling them short: while improvisation is unquestionably a strong component of their music, sD’s collective journey has witnessed them transporting well past any confines of the associated traditions of the genre. (Certainly, having no drummer and three percussionists serves as a catalyst, in that regard!)

Conversely, to call their music “psychodelic” would be, in a sense, almost demeaning or doing them a disservice. While exhibiting certain characteristics and a discernable influence, it is quickly apparent that simakDialog possess the musical diction, prowess and ambitions which easily distance them from typical contemporary bands of the idiom.

These are accomplished, world-class musicians, displaying a remarkable sensitivity and collective intuition — one that has matured, developed and could only be refined to such an elevated degree by exceptionally-gifted players working together over a prolonged period. However you wish to label it, there’s clearly a willingness — even a preference — to seek new ground. They have dispensed with “the road less traveled” in favor of taking “the road never before traveled!”

For many afficiandos, this fearless, aggressive mentality accurately symbolizes the very nature and essence of modern jazz. … And simakDialog’s body of work evidences this quality — in a rudementary sense — as they continue their voyage of discovery, continually venturing through amazing, previously-uncharted sonic territories with each successive album.

2007 marked the band’s international debut, on MoonJune Records, with the release of the well-received and highly-regarded Patahan (MJR015). The album and its follow-up — 2009’s resplendent effort, Demi Masa — prompted enthusiastic reviews in more than 25 countries and allured legions of appreciative new listeners from around the globe.

The band has recorded three other albums: Lukisan; Baur; and, Trance/Mission. While all of their efforts have been outstanding in their own right, Trance/Mission did have the distinction of garnering the band the coveted 2003 Indonesian Music Award for “Best Jazz/Contemporary Jazz Album.” [That same year, Riza Arshad won an individual award (“Best Jazz/Contemporary Jazz Producer”), also, for his production work on the album. Being the Indonesian equivalent of “The Grammy’s,” the achievement is one of the greatest honors a musician there can attain.]

Armed with an eclipsing progressive vision and coupled with an unquenchable thirst for fresh, new musical sojourns, simakDialog continue to win over new fans around the globe. Their work remains as vibrant as it does unpredictable. Refusing to be stereotyped — even after twenty years — the Indonesian progressive giants continue to boldly go where no one has gone before.

Currently, simakDialog is set to release their long-awaited sixth album (and third for MoonJune Records) in the late summer-early fall of this year (2013). Having performed previously in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Nepal, Germany, and The Netherlands, the band is eager to bring their stirring musical performance to their growing audiences scattered across the Western Hemisphere.

These are true progressive pioneers, parlaying brave, new music of the highest order as their just rewards. In spite of their corporate success, they remain very kind, humble individuals. Their stirring, magical music is truly deserving of such broader audiences.

Shueh-li Ong

AUSTRALIAN-BORN SINGAPORE
ARTIST-PRODUCER-THEREMINIST
modern synthpop – indie – prog – fusion

What one immediately notices on listening to Shueh-li is her distinctive use of the ethereal theremin, plucky guqin, exotic synth hooks, rustic tin-whistle and rich vocal harmonies.
Shueh-li Ong
Evolution of Media calls it “Sophisticated pop that fuses Eastern & Western music influences that only an exceptional talent can pull off.”

One wonders thereafter; why the theremin?

Shueh-li was a student of electronic music while studying classical piano at the Elder Conservatorium in Australia (her birthplace), with interactive multimedia techniques as her area of research.
Curiosity and perversity got involved in the selection of instruments she would formerly pursue. The theremin? “… is not just a piece of history. It forces me to be disciplined and humble. We often have quarrels over who’s right, like lovers do!”

As one observes her petite frame flit from stitching the theremin into a beat pattern, slipping in a synth bass to bolster softsynth designs, producing sometimes poignant lyrics, other times a luscious instrumental, one realizes that her desire to embrace her foreign expressions is the central theme.

Xenovibes (foreign expressions; Austral+Asia, classical +electronic) became her flagship show band which premiered in Singapore to a standing-room-only crowd. She made her US debut at the Dallas Museum of Art a year later in 2005, to an audience of 4,380.

In 2010 Shueh-li relocated from Dallas to Nashville to write her debut solo album A Working TItle – special edition, released August 2012.

Since she began her journey, Shueh-li has been the 1st thereminist at various events, and worked with &/ or recorded such artists as Dean Parks (Steely Dan), Mike McKinney (Jackson 5) & Curtis Randall (LeAnne Rimes). But Shueh-li (pronounced Shelley) still has places to go; she wants to offer her music to the world.

Singapore‘s Diva of the Theremin and MoogMusic endorsed artist, continues to write and perform as long as she is inspired. Though she is often spoken of in the vein of Kate Bush, Janet Jackson and Ryuichi Sakamoto, Shueh-li stands out as her own production!

“An inspired artist who has brought fresh ideas in the theremin field.” said ThereminVox of Italy. “A truly amazing talent!” Arts Monthly Australia. Electronic Musician magazine covered her studio techniques in a full-page article “No Barriers”.

Mavara to join Obilvion Sun on September 9th!

August 21, 2013 By NJProghouse

mavara

Mavara, is Iran’s first premier progressive rock band. The name Mavara translates to “beyond everything you think” which speaks to the essence of their music. The band was formed in 2001 by composer/keyboardist Farhood Ghadiri and over the years has had a fluid line-up of members, performing extensively in Tehran and Karaj.
Currently Mavara is comprised of Ghadiri along with Ashkan Hamedi/vocals, Arash Radan/guitar, Sina Khodaiefer/bass, Anis Oveisi/keyboards and American Jim Welch/Drums

Because of their unique sound and talent, Mavara quickly gained notoriety in Iran, receiving acclaim from the Tehran Industry and Science University as “Best Rock Band at a Live Performance”. Additional honors include an invitation to perform for the internet music festival, “Teheran Avenue” in both 2003 and 2005. Their music is best described in terms of their influences, with a generous helping of Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree and Marillion being the first bands that come to mind. In other words, more on the melodic side of Progressive Rock.

Mavara began recording their first Persian language album, “Ultimate Sound” in 2003 which was released in 2005, and gained recognition in an article published on the website Zirzamin.se. Later in 2005, Mavara teamed up with the band Aavaar for a benefit show in Iran to promote the new album. It wasn’t long thereafter that the band began recording their first English language album, “Forgotten Inside”, which was released at a private concert in 2009. Among their first tour stops, was the Crescendo Music Festival in France during the summer of 2010. In 2013, Mavara released their epic third album “Season of Salvation”, on Transit Music Group Records [TMG] in the US and is currently touring and promoting the album here in the United States.

Since arriving in the American soil, the band has been the subject of television programs [NH Chronicle/ABC Television, ‘Stir It Up’ on MCTV, etc], College radio live appearances [Tufts University, etal ] and countless magazine articles, The Hippo, The Union Leader etc, and most recently were featured in Spotlight Magazine where they graced the cover of the weekly magazine. Mavara was also invited to be one of 8 bands to perform at the prestigious “ProgDay Festival 2013” the longest running progressive rock festival in the world. A recent review of the new album states: “Season of Salvation” never rests on its laurels, it is quite impressive in structure, style, and overall atmosphere”; “These guys (and gal) impress whether they are focusing on ambiance or on a great jam”; “.. a fantastic album.” Jason Spencer on Progarchives, Aug. 2013 (4 out of 5 stars).

Oblivion Sun

http://www.oblivionsun.com/

Oblivion Sun is the brainchild of Frank Wyatt and Stanley Whitaker, founding members of 70’s Arista recording artists Happy The Man. HTM reformed in 1999 to headline Nearfest 2000 and they released their first CD in almost 25 years, “The Muse Awakens” in 2004. Frank and Stan recognized the difficulty in getting together to work on new HTM music due to personal schedules and proximity. They had amassed an abundance of material that they feared would never get recorded if they waited for HTM to record it. It was out of this reality that they began recording the duo project “Pedal Giant Animals”. The PGA project, with guest musicians Chris Mack and Pete Princiotto, became the seed for a new band…Oblivion Sun.

Oblivion Sun comfortably crosses many genres while staying true to their progressive roots. This is a band that’s not afraid to get downright funky at times and throw down some serious rock grooves and even improvisation. Expect a good deal of vocal content as well but fear not, this is still prog and fans of HTM’s lush arrangements will not be disappointed.

The ensemble features the compositional and performance skills of all four musicians: Stan Whitaker on guitar and vocals, Frank Wyatt on keyboards and reeds, Bill Brasso on drums, and David Hughes on bass and vocals. Together, Oblivion Sun have created a powerful, dynamic sound that is sure to satisfy all prog fans, young and old alike. The band has quickly established itself as a forerunner in the ongoing evolution of progressive music. In January of 2013, the band released their sophomore effort entitled “The High Places.” This tour-de-force maintains the band’s instrumental progressive roots while expanding their songwriting style. They plan to tour in the U.S. and are looking towards Europe in 2014. They have put together a live performance set that will combine music from both Oblivion Sun albums and some prime cuts from the Happy the Man days.
