“From a young age, I always knew that I would be a musician. While I was fortunate to have a clear sense of purpose early on, other decisions proved to be elusive. I loved so many types of music. I enjoyed writing songs and playing for other artists as well. Rather than choose one path, I just immersed myself in nearly every musical opportunity I could find myself in. Inevitably, the time came when I had to dig deep, put myself in a new environment, and create an album that reflected the different directions I’ve been pulled towards, both in music and in life.”

Tom Brislin is a musician, songwriter, and producer. After worldwide touring and recording on keyboards with several notable rock and pop artists, Tom relocated to Nashville, Tennessee from his native New Jersey to write and record his debut solo album, Hurry Up and Smell the Roses. The album, which Brislin describes as “Cinematic Pop”, was released in Fall 2012.

Hurry Up and Smell the Roses was written, produced, performed, and recorded by Brislin. The album features guest contributions from guitarist and platinum songwriter Clint Lagerberg, vocalist Annie Haslam of Renaissance, and Theremin synthesist Shueh-li Ong.

Influenced by his older siblings’ classic rock record collections, his parents’ love of jazz and classical music, and his own discovery of synth-laden pop, Brislin would eventually find himself performing in all of these settings. He has toured and recorded with Yes, Meat Loaf, Debbie Harry, Renaissance, Camel, Glen Burtnik, Francis Dunnery, and was the founder, lead singer and songwriter for the band Spiraling.

Music review site Babysue.com proclaims: “Hurry Up And Smell The Roses is a slick album chock full of intelligent compositions that shine a spotlight on this man’s unique gift for writing memorable melodies and smart pensive lyrics. He’s a master craftsman with arrangements…and he’s got a voice that’s absolutely fantastic.”

THE_TEA_CLUB

The Tea Club is a band from New Jersey. The band consists of Patrick McGowan (vocals/guitar), Dan McGowan (vocals/guitar), Joe Rizzolo (drums), Jamie Wolff (bass/vocals), and Renee Pestritto (keyboards/flute/vocals).

The Tea Club was formed in 2003. Between the inception and 2007, they made several recordings, one of which attracted the attention of producer Tim Gilles (Taking Back Sunday, Thursday, The Fiendz). Tim produced, recorded and mixed their first full length album at his studio in Jersey City, Big Blue Meenie Studios. The Tea Club’s first album, General Winter’s Secret Museum, was released in July 2008. The album included original artwork by Dan and Patrick McGowan. The album cover was a painting done by artist Kendra DeSimone.

After briefly touring General Winter’s Secret Museum along the East Coast, The Tea Club returned to Big Blue Meenie Studios to record their second album in the Fall of 2009. The album was again produced by Tim Gilles, and featured guest keyboardist Tom Brislin.

The Tea Club released their second album Rabbit on October 9th 2010. Like General Winter’s Secret Museum, the album cover was painted by Kendra DeSimone and featured original artwork by Dan and Patrick McGowan. Rabbit was met with very positive reviews. The Organ ‘zine called Rabbit “excellent” and praised The Tea Club for being a band that is ”not afraid to nail their colours firmly to their mast and fly directly in to the face of fashion.” Indie Music Reviewer said that Rabbit ”can appease any listener of just about any genre,” giving the album 5 out of 5 stars.

They spent the rest of 2010 and the majority of 2011 playing many shows along the east coast, including the ProgDay festival in North Carolina. Reviews and articles about the band were featured in publications such as Metro Philly, Indie Music Reviewer, altprogcore, Origivation, and JUMP. The band also released several homemade music videos for songs from the Rabbit album. They ended the year 2011 by playing an acoustic show opening for Jimmy Gnecco of the band Ours at the North Star Bar in Philadelphia.

In early 2012, The Tea Club once again returned to Big Blue Meenie Studios to record their third album with producer Tim Gilles. Following these recording sessions, The Tea Club were asked to open for Beardfish on their mini-tour of the United States in May 2012.

The Tea Club’s third album, Quickly Quickly Quickly, was released on November 15th, 2012. Once again, the album cover was done by Kendra DeSimone and featured original artwork by Dan and Patrick. Quickly Quickly Quickly was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews. Dangerdog Music Reviews called the album “wildly inventive”, while Instrumentali.com said that “The Tea Club has taken the dormant rock beast and tied a choke chain onto it.” Conor Fynes of The Metal Observer had this to say in his review of Quickly Quickly Quickly: “Porcupine Tree frontman Steven Wilson once stated in an interview that ‘…the Mars Volta, Tool, and Radiohead. . .are the future of progressive music.’ I would like to add The Tea Club to that list.”

On May 18th, 2013, The Tea Club performed at the Terra Incognita Festival in Quebec City, Canada. This was the band’s first live appearance outside of the USA. The band is currently touring the Northeast United States in support of Quickly Quickly Quickly.

Help Support Roxy and Dukes, the Home of the NJProghouse Progressive Music Series

November 2, 2013 By NJProghouse

Our good friends at Roxy & Dukes (The HOME of the NJProghouse) are holding a indiegogo campaign to raise funds for improvements and expansions.

The R&D folks are an amazing group of dedicated people who strive to help promote ALL of the arts. They have many great ideas that can only come to fruition with your help.

The great thing about indiegogo is that with your pledge, no matter how big or small, Roxy & Dukes will receive that money, there is no “you did not meet your goal, sorry” , every dollar pledged will go towards their goals. We consider everyone at R&D (Jim, Lenny, Dee, David, Eddie and the rest of the crew) part of the NJP family.

Please help us in supporting their goal, as we look forward to many years of bringing you the best in live progressive music straight from Roxy and Dukes Roadhouse!

Thank You!

– Jim, Alan, Amy, Jon, Ray, mikE, Bony, Michy, Nor and the rest of the NJP “Staph”

Welcome to Roxy & Dukes Roadhouse!

R&D’s is many things, an entertainment venue, a cafe’/restaurant and a nightclub. But more than that, it’s a place where art is created and performed, where people from all walks are welcome to enjoy themselves with their friends or to meet new ones, a place to let your hair down and explore your wilder side and experience a wide variety of entertainment that you would normally need to travel far to and visit multiple destinations to see and hear.

Here at R&D’s we do our best to excite and entertain our patrons while providing a relaxing, warm, comfortable environment all at the same time with a style, borrowed from many, but all our own.

We have been very fortunate in being able to bring our patrons a very diverse calendar of events in the past two and a half years. Our stage has hosted original music and stage productions ranging from Jazz, Blues, Swing, Americana, Blue Grass, Indie, Alternative, Rockabilly, Punk, Ska, Metal, Circus Sideshow, Bellydance, Vaudeville, Burlesque, Comedy and more. It’s been our great pleasure that so many varied and talented artists whether they be local, from around the country and many from around the world such as Canada, South America, England, Germany, France, Austria, The Netherlands and as far away as Australia have come to join us on our stage and to be able to share that with all of you.

Our goal is to continue to always do just that and to always strive to bring our patrons the best experiences that we can.Beyond bringing in great artists, we often host themed events. For example, we have  Zombie Beauty Pageants, Beard and Mustache contests, Steampunk parties, Alternative Model and Photographer networking events, Classic car gatherings and art gallery showings and auctions. We have also become the preferred venue for our local School of Rock, giving young student musicians an opportunity to play out in front of an audience. In our off hours we open our doors for instructors to teach workshops such as Bellydance Lessons, Pin-up model classes, Burlesque workshops and Swing dance lessons. Our space is often used for photo shoots and Band Video shoots. Often there is no rental fee for these events, we are happy to help out our area artists in any way we can.

To that end, we feel that certain improvements to R&D’s would help us better serve our customers as well as the many artists that join us here which brings us to why we have launched this Indiegogo funding campaign. The items we are seeking help with are:

 1) An “Old Timey”  roofed front porch added to the entrance of the club. It would be 40′ wide and 12′ deep with a small built in area for acoustic musicians. The porch would be furnished with cocktail tables and chairs for extended bar and restaurant service and decorated to reflect old Roadhouse porches from a bygone era. Our intention is to add a new experience for our customers while also providing an element that draws attention to the establishment from passersby that have yet to visit us. Estimated Cost:$15,000

 2) The installation of a full service coffee and espresso bar.  We feel that a coffee bar will provide further choices to our customers to enjoy a tasty treat while visiting us. Not all customers come for dinner or appetizers and not all customers drink alcohol and even many that do, often, responsibly seek an alternative. We also feel, inclusion of a coffee bar may help us to provide extended operating hours and to serve a wider range of patrons. Estimated Cost: $30,000

 3) Upgrades to our sound system and stage. In the few years that we have been open we have hosted hundreds of musical and theatrical acts at R&D’s. The range of talent has been astounding. To better serve our audience and the artists themselves, we would like to install Improvements to the sound system including Powered PA speakers, Powered Monitor speakers, a new sound board and additional microphones. Additionally we would like to upgrade our stage lighting to LED lights in order to save energy and money while also providing a cooler and more comfortable experience for our artists. Lastly, our stage surface, currently plywood would be replaced by a professional surface meant to absorb sound beneficially and provide a more safe and comfortable platform for our more energetic performers. Estimated Cost: $15,000

4) Upgrades to our bar. These would include soft drink and juice gun delivery systems that would reduce storage, lower our recycling waste, save money and help our bartenders and servers be more efficient. Adding beer tap systems in order to provide more varied and affordable selections to our customers. Estimated Cost: $15,000

 5) An outdoor Tiki Bar and lounge. This would entail decoratively fencing off a 40′ x 40′ area of our back yard immediately adjacent to our bar. Building a 12′ x12′ roofed tiki hut with bar and stools as well as 10 sets of patio furniture and umbrellas. There would be a new exit constructed leading from the interior bar to the exterior Tiki Lounge. Again, we feel this will add to more diverse experiences for our customers, providing outdoor entertainment  during our Spring, Summer and Fall months.Estimated Cost: $25,000

With your help, these various projects and improvements to our already successful model can be realized in order to bring a greater level of entertainment to our diverse audience and to help us to continue to provide a productive venue where the arts in many forms can continue to thrive for many years to come.

Thank you for your time and generous donation!

beardspace

A six piece psychedelic-technical explosion of sound and color. A wide range of strong emotions captured through sound…planned sections of improvisation combined with intricate composition. Sometimes mellow and pretty with vocal harmonies – sometimes heavy and ripping with guitars, drums and synths – always grooving. The Beardly Beast that will certainly move you til the end.

Out of the Beardspace is a 6-piece experimental rock band from South Jersey. Since their formation in the summer of 2010,they have released two EP’s and a full length album, and played all over the Philadelphia/South Jersey area at venues such as the Trocadero, the Stone Pony, the North Star Bar, Underground Arts and Legendary Dobbs. In the summer of 2011 they moved into a house in Cherry Hill NJ together, and in the summer of 2012 they spent 6 months living on a mountain/farm in Linden Virginia growing their own food, living in tents, cooking every meal over an open fire, and practicing sustainable living. Out of the Beardspace has been it’s most active in 2013. They kicked off the warm season with their annual festival, ‘Beardfest’, which was the most successful edition so far.

During the summer, the band performed at about ten festvals, some of the more well known being Progday, Camp Jam in the Pines and Evolvefest.

Now with the winter approaching quickly, the band is working on recordings for a new album and planning to revamp it’s live set for 2014.

Travis Larson Band

With six studio albums and two full-length performance DVDs, the award-winning Travis Larson Band is firmly rooted as one of instrumental music’s premiere acts, having worked on record with Steve Lukather (Toto), Victor Wooten (Bela Fleck), Dave LaRue (Joe Satriani, John Petrucci, Dixie Dregs), Vinx (Sting, Herbie Hancock) and having shared live billing with Ted Nugent, UFO, Steve Morse (Deep Purple, Dixie Dregs), Ronnie Montrose, to name a few. Travis Larson Band’s recent release Soundmind earned accolades as Guitar Player Magazine Editor’s Top Three in 2011. Well known for their live performances, the Travis Larson Band masterfully delivers full throttle rock-fusion that soars with originality and some say, has the power to unshackle the listener of the chains that bind them to the doldrums of day to day living.

A note from Jim Robinson re:Homecoming Weekend 2013

October 18, 2013 By NJProghouse

Well I have recovered from one of the most wonderful weekends of my life.
NJ Proghouse Homecoming Weekend was truly beautiful. I want to thank each and every person who attended Homecoming. You all are the lifeblood of progressive music by the manner in which you embraced each and every act over the weekend. And you the artists who were those acts, you were the oxygen that fed us all. Nine great acts who played your hearts out and gave us memorable after memorable performance. I will never forget what you did for the Homecoming. Roxy and Duke’s Crew and their fearless leader Jim Parks I give you all I can in the way of thanks for helping to make the Homecoming feel like a big old family shindig and for being part of the family. I am eternally grateful to have found my way to you all. Of course the STAPH of NJ Proghouse, Sharon and Jacob you are the ones who pick me up and carry me through the madness of putting this all together. You are ALL my source and I love you all. So I suppose that maybe we should do this again next year. What say you?
