Tangekanic release their debut physical product in the form of a live album “HOTEL CANTAFFORDIT” (Recorded live at the NJProghouse)

February 11, 2018 By NJProghouse

Tangekanic release their debut physical product in the form of a live album “HOTEL CANTAFFORDIT” recorded on one night in a nice tight New Jersey club right at the end of the USA leg of their 2017 tour.

Tangekanic is a touring unit that plays the music of both The Tangent and Karmakanic and features members of both, working together in one collaborative set.

Jonas Reingold – Bass Guitar
Andy Tillison – Keyboards & Vocals
Göran Edman – Vocals
Luke Machin – Guitar
Steve Roberts – Drums

The shows were exceptionally well recieved:

“One of the most moving performances this humble reviewer has ever witnessed….. this was a performance few present will ever forget” – ROCK SOCIETY magazine

“This is an effortless masterclass through some of the finest songs the bands have to offer” – PROG Magazine

“We went across Europe and took the rather mad decision to go to the States too” says Flower Kings/Tangent/Karmakanic/Steve Hackett bass player Jonas Reingold. ” We overcame a lot of problems and went and played our music to the world and fortunately the world seemed to quite like it”

Especially Micro-Polynesia apparently, as Jonas explains on the album. As the rag-tag band of rebellious prog rockers traversed continents in uncomfortable vans, stayed in horrible (and lovely) hotels, fought their way through the sea of bureaucracy to get into the USA, got searched and starved in Switzerland, waited in the rain for breakdown trucks, lost hotels in the dark, and lived on a finely balanced shoestring tightrope for a couple of months they managed to do the shows missing one of the members who had been forced to pull out days before the tour began. They wrote a song behind stage in the hour before their show at the UK Summers End festival and blew the house down with it. They played in the open air during a thunderstorm, they had one gig cancelled in the USA without the owner bothering to contact them… they didn’t get paid at a gig in Germany despite having a great night there, and they didn’t for one second think of packing up and going home.

Those lucky enough to see the tour were unaware that in 2017 THREE members of the band would be recognised in an important magazine’s poll and gain top five instrumentalist ratings in their categories, Luke Machin coming in at #5 guitarist, Jonas Reingold as #5 bassist, Andy Tillison as #1 keyboards player in the PROG magazine poll – and not only that but the Tangent’s 2017 studio album “The Slow Rust Of Forgotten Machinery” also made #5.

Now’s the time for you to check out the opinions of the magazines, the polls, the publicity, whatever. You can hear Tangekanic play a set of songs from their most recent output on this one hour plus real live recording.. (not a studio album with audience noise), crowd funded by the band’s most loyal supporters. Made in a small intimate venue that has for years championed progressive Music in the USA, the New Jersey Proghouse. Hear Karmakanic’s half hour epic “God The Universe and Everything Else Nobody Really cares About” butted up to The Tangent’s straight between the eyes instrumental “Doctor Livingstone I Presume” and yes, you can get to hear the track that got everyone talking “Sanctuary In Music” complete with its 30 seconds of silence for the victims of three concert massacres of recent years.

It was the boldest and most amazing of adventures.

The album is available to pre-order now at

R.I.P. Doug Lunn

February 11, 2017 By NJProghouse

James W Robinson Jr

Stunned and sad. I was fortunate to have met Doug on a couple of occasions. He is a NJ Proghouse artist alum. Rest In Peace.

GE Stinson

Doug Lunn, a very sweet human being and excellent musician, died this morning. I received this sad news from Gregg Bendian a few minutes ago. I’ve known Doug since the New Music Monday-Alligator Lounge days in the early 90s. The last time Doug and I played together was for Gregg‘s birthday concert at the Baked Potato a few years ago.

May the bodhisattvas greet Doug with open arms and give him refuge. May he be free from suffering and confusion. May the bodhisattvas also bring peace and comfort to Doug’s family and all who love him. Om Mani Padme Hum.

The loss of one of our dearest friends…

February 21, 2016 By NJProghouse

Piotr Grudzinski

Today I got the news that my friend Piotr Grudzinski had left this world.

With each time I say this I feel a terrible emptying in my heart and tears well up. For those who do not know, Piotr was more than a member of a band I loved but a great friend of mine and of others in the Proghouse family.

When Piotr and the rest of Riverside landed at JFK my ugly mug, along with the mug of Ray Loboda, was the first to greet him and the boys on their first trip to America. I think that by the time we got onto the Belt Parkway we were friends for life.

Ray and I are fortunate for this to happen as we were asked by the guys of NEARFest to be the transport coordinators and so we went to get them. That was a great weekend. Music, nonsense, liquid refreshment, educating all the boys about Tony Danza and rusty trombones, with A bunch of us from NJP and a certain Englishman name Progzilla all crammed in a room, and what it all meant while laughing until we couldn’t breathe. Piotr and I watching as much World Cup as we could in between everything else we were doing that weekend. We were building a friendship that will last as long as Ray and I have brains that can recall the memories.

About a year later I was in the air with Ray and Keith Loboda as we headed to The Netherlands and Germany to hang with Piotr and all of Riverside for 6 great days and 2 great shows. When Ray and I walked in to the first show’s sound check with Rob Palmen we were moved by the way Piotr stopped playing, put down his guitar, and came over to us and gave us each a hug followed one by one by Mariusz, Michal and Piotr K. Family grew even larger with the entire crew and Sir Harold Jansen and Oliver Wenzel making our trip that much more special.

Riverside came back the next year for an exclusive show at NJ Proghouse and then we were off to Montreal for a long weekend of fun as they played FMPM. Ray, Noreen Loboda and I with the band and manager Rob Palmen and crew.

It was like there was no time between visits. Although saying goodbye always sucked.

Then we (Ray, Kevin and I) brought Riverside in for NEARfest in 2010. Twice more they came back and played at NJProghouse.

We have been very fortunate to have these men as friends and for bringing Piotr in to our lives.

The thing that sticks with me most from the latest visit this past September was how Piotr and I fell right back in the groove. Both In the green room at The Crossroads and at the show in Webster Hall a couple nights later. We sat and talked and sometimes said nothing at all. I will treasure these memories for all my time.
I know that all of us at NJP are feeling some kind of pain and sadness as I imagine many of you are. Remember Piotr Grudzinski in whatever way you can and be happy for that memory of when it came your way.

Keep his wife Monika, his family, Mariusz, Michal and Piotr K and all his other mates in hearts and minds.

I will miss you my brother. Much love.

Peace-
Jim

STICKMEN

Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto, the powerhouse bass and drums of the group King Crimson for a few decades, bring that tradition to all their playing. Levin plays the Chapman Stick, from which the band takes it’s name. Having bass and guitar strings, the Chapman Stick functions at times like two instruments. Markus Reuter plays his self-designed touch style guitar – again covering much more ground than a guitar or a bass. And Mastelotto’s drumming encompasses not just the acoustic kit, but a unique electronic setup too, allowing him to add loops, samples, percussion, and more.

TONY LEVIN
Born in Boston, Tony Levin started out in classical music, playing bass in the Rochester Philharmonic. Then moving into jazz and rock, he has had a notable career, recording and touring with Peter Gabriel, John Lennon, Pink Floyd, Yes, Alice Cooper, and many more. He has also released 5 solo CDs and three books. In addition to touring with Stick Men, he is currently a member of King Crimson and Peter Gabriel Band, and jazz bands Levin Brothers and L’Image. His popular website, tonylevin.com, featured one of the web’s first blogs, and has over 4 million visits.

MARKUS REUTER
Markus is a composer, guitarist, and producer. Initially trained as a pianist, he subsequently studied Robert Fripp’s Guitar Craft and learned to play the Chapman Stick, later moving onto the U8 Touch Guitar. Reuter has released several solo recordings and worked extensively with other musicians. He is one of the core members of the experimental band Centrozoon, is half of the duo Tuner (with Pat Mastelotto) and was also a member of Europa String Choir. Reuter has collaborated with Ian Boddy, Robert Rich, No-Man singer Tim Bowness, and many others.

PAT MASTELOTTO
Very rarely does a drummer go on to forge the most successful career on the demise of their former hit band. Phil Collins and Dave Grohl have managed it, so too has Pat Mastelotto, a self taught drummer from Northern California, who has also been involved with pushing the envelope of electronic drumming. Pat has spent a lifetime jumping genres from pop, to prog, to electronica to world music with – among others – Mr. Mister, XTC, David Sylvian, The Rembrandts, Kimmo Pohjonen, and for the last 20 years with King Crimson.

Project RnL

RNL

https://www.facebook.com/ProjectRnL

https://www.youtube.com/user/ProjectRnL

Project RnL is in essence, the long awaited answer to every Progressive Rock fan’s unrequited desires. At last, a fresh group of wildly creative talent who perfectly combine the compositional skills of Yes, the eccentricity of Gentle Giant and the virtuosity of Dream Theater all with a classic warmth and humor kindred to cherished super groups like the Beatles, Queen, or Frank Zappa. RnL’s songs and musicians strive for nothing short of perfection, executed with a modern edge and mettle all of their own.

The project is based around the compositions and arrangement of front man Eyal Amir, RnL keyboard player and producer, who began his unique and remarkably inspired works in 2003. Amir was attending Rimon School of Jazz & Contemporary Music in Ramat HaSharon, a suburb of Tel Aviv, Israel, when he met anomalous vocalist, Ray Livnat. The duo formed a musical compatibility that would prove to be difficult to parallel despite countless projects and collaborations with other artists from around the world.

In 2010 they formed Project RnL, which stands for Rock n’ LOL, in reference to the band’s humorous and unpretentious approach to their art. They swiftly recruited a myriad of accomplished players and vocalists to perform Amir’s challenging yet danceable grooves and epic rock riffs. The addition of guitarist Alon Tamir, took no consideration, he originally began working with the pair on various projects in 2007, since then Alon’s consistently flawless performances had continued to diminish their urge to work with anyone else.

The project proceeded to create one viral hit after another, drawing attention with their effortless journeys through 70’s style progressive rock, jazz fusion, modern rock and even bizarre electro pop showcasing Amir’s stunning vocal arrangements as they ebb and flow in blissful cascades of iconic pop production.

The amusing and tasteful production of their videos wowed viewers world-wide. Soon RnL’s offerings on YouTube drew a big following and reached millions of people on the net. RnL’s rapid popularity caught the attention of many big names and suddenly they were collaborating with respected artists such as Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater), Jeff Berlin, Pomplamoose, and The Living Tombstone.

Rudess continued to work extensively with the band and its members and within a year, Amir found himself living New York City, collaborating with Jordan and many other notable names. He spent the following 2 years immersing himself in New York’s music performance, production, education and technology scenes, meanwhile in Tel Aviv, Ray remained to form eccentric progressive group Anakdota. As 2013 drew to an end an overwhelming feeling that he left something unfinished behind, something more than he was finding in the States, convinced Amir it was time to return to Israel.

Although originally intended as a purely studio entity, Project RnL inevitably made the jump to a live environment almost instantly upon Amir’s return from NYC. Ray and Alon were ready and eager to embark on the necessary adventure they had all nearly missed, along with previous drummer, Dekel Dvir, however they still needed one more thing. In the past they had worked with many talented bass players, often someone new at each session, yet had never settled with one. The band put out an ad on Facebook that read, “I’m looking for the best bass player you know” and bassist Or Lubianiker responded. Or’s witty response was a sure sign his confidence and humor, both on and off stage, and it was no joke, he fit the requirement perfectly. Already in shape from touring with Marty Friedman and Yossi Sassi, he was ready immediately, and in no time the band was selling out shows.

Project RnL is a group that must be seen in order to believe, from the energy, to the technique, the truly genuine vibe, the rush from one perfect rock riff to the next, the group’s effortless execution of the complex time signatures and air-tight layered arrangements, they deliver a virtuoso performance on all instruments. Ray’s unparalleled vocal style and incredible range seems more like the voice of an instrument than a human. Tamir’s expertly executed guitar totally shreds, in exactly the way you were hoping for, every time. Bassist Or Lubianiker’s playing is hauntingly sublime and new drummer Sharon Petrover is out of this world.

The band is currently in the studio working to complete their new studio album for release in the spring, 2016. Check them out at their performance at NAMM in January, or on their Europe Tour February 17th – March 20th with Ozric Tentacles.

Project RnL are:

Eyal Amir – Keyboards, Ray Livnat – Vocals, Or Lubianiker – Bass

Alon Tamir – Guitar and Sharon Petrover – Drums
