JOLLY to Release New Album, The Audio Guide To Happiness (Part 2), March 5; Announces US Tour Dates

January 14, 2013 By NJProghouse

jolly

January 14, 2013 (Los Angeles, CA) – In March 2011, rock act JOLLY released The Audio Guide To Happiness (Part 1), the first of a two-part series designed to bring listeners to a state of true happiness. To optimize the JOLLY listening experience, the band collaborated with a professor and graduate students at a nearby university, conducting studies on over 5,000 subjects to perfect the usage of binaural tones in their music.

Precisely two years after the release of part 1, The Audio Guide To Happiness (Part 2) has arrived and is set for a North American released date of March 5, 2013 via InsideOut Music.  A list of European release dates can also be seen below.

In October 2012, Hurricane Sandy struck JOLLY hard, destroying drummer/producer Louis Abramson’s home, which also functioned as the band’s practice space and recording studio. All of Louis’ possessions and a lot of the band’s equipment were ruined. The members of JOLLY were devastated, and the timing couldn’t have been worse, as the band was in the midst of finalizing The Audio Guide To Happiness (Part 2).  In need of new equipment, JOLLY started a fundraising campaign and their incredible fans came through in a big way to help the band rebuild after this major disaster.  Beyond the music, The Audio Guide To Happiness (Part 2) is a standing symbol of JOLLY’s recovery from the storm.

“We couldn’t be more excited to finally share The Audio Guide To Happiness (Part 2) with the world,” comments the band.  “After the devastation we experienced with Hurricane Sandy, we have been in a rebuilding phase, and the release of this album stands as a major milestone in our recovery.  Musically, we set out to make Audio Guide 2 our richest sounding record, offering solid hooks, interesting arrangements and sonic textures that cover a wide range of styles.  We’re extremely proud of what we created.

Even without considering the binaural brainwave technology embedded throughout, this album offers the listener an experience like no other.  JOLLY pushes the limits of accessibility in The Audio Guide to Happiness (Part 2) with its powerful riffs, infectious hooks, and undeniable grooves, all within the context of their signature JOLLY atmosphere.  Your first listen will leave you thinking, and your second will leave you a fan for life.

In support of the new album, JOLLY will join label-mates RIVERSIDE on a small tour starting at the end of April, which follows a month of overseas dates with Riverside in March.  A list of North American dates can be seen below.

“From a young age, I always knew that I would be a musician. While I was fortunate to have a clear sense of purpose early on, other decisions proved to be elusive. I loved so many types of music. I enjoyed writing songs and playing for other artists as well. Rather than choose one path, I just immersed myself in nearly every musical opportunity I could find myself in. Inevitably, the time came when I had to dig deep, put myself in a new environment, and create an album that reflected the different directions I’ve been pulled towards, both in music and in life.”

Tom Brislin is a musician, songwriter, and producer. After worldwide touring and recording on keyboards with several notable rock and pop artists, Tom relocated to Nashville, Tennessee from his native New Jersey to write and record his debut solo album, Hurry Up and Smell the Roses. The album, which Brislin describes as “Cinematic Pop”, was released in Fall 2012.

Hurry Up and Smell the Roses was written, produced, performed, and recorded by Brislin. The album features guest contributions from guitarist and platinum songwriter Clint Lagerberg, vocalist Annie Haslam of Renaissance, and Theremin synthesist Shueh-li Ong.

Influenced by his older siblings’ classic rock record collections, his parents’ love of jazz and classical music, and his own discovery of synth-laden pop, Brislin would eventually find himself performing in all of these settings. He has toured and recorded with Yes, Meat Loaf, Debbie Harry, Renaissance, Camel, Glen Burtnik, Francis Dunnery, and was the founder, lead singer and songwriter for the band Spiraling.

Music review site Babysue.com proclaims: “Hurry Up And Smell The Roses is a slick album chock full of intelligent compositions that shine a spotlight on this man’s unique gift for writing memorable melodies and smart pensive lyrics. He’s a master craftsman with arrangements…and he’s got a voice that’s absolutely fantastic.”

Michael Dunford of Renaissance passes away

November 21, 2012 By NJProghouse

20121121-181335.jpgMichael Dunford, musical composer and guitarist of the progressive rock band Renaissance passed away on Tuesday, November 20, 2012. He had just returned home from the first leg of the band’s North American tour and suffered a massive Instantaneous Cerebral Hemorrhage while dining at his home in Surrey, England Monday night. He was rushed to hospital where doctors declared his condition irreversible and terminal. He passed away at 11:06 pm GMT, surrounded by his family without having regained consciousness.

The fairly reclusive and soft-spoken composer, a mainstay in the world of progressive rock, was born, raised and educated in Surrey. His first job was selling clothing in a local shop followed by a stint as an airside driver at Heathrow Airport which enabled him to form a “skiffle” group which lead to his first rock band called Nashville Teens in the early 1960s. Nashville Teens reached #6 on U.K. singles charts with their version of Tobacco Road. On leaving them, he formed several other bands such as The Pentad and The Plebes. One night he went to see the original band Renaissance perform locally and ended up joining them in the early 1970s. The original band members were Jim McCarty, Louis Cennamo, John Hawken, Keith Relf and Jane Relf.

Dunford and vocalist Annie Haslam first took Renaissance’s reins from former Yardbirds members, Keith Relf and Jim McCarty in 1971 and soon had established the group as a world class recording and touring act, selling out venues like New York’s Carnegie Hall and The Royal Albert Hall in London. They would go on to release over a dozen albums before eventually parting ways in the mid-1980s. However, they would continue to write new material together and in 2001 reunited the band to record a new studio album, tour the following year, and release a live album. After another sabbatical, the refreshed line-up was introduced to the world and captured for posterity on “Turn of the Cards and Scheherazade and Other Stories Live 2011.”

Earlier this fall, Dunford and the band completed recording their first new studio album in twelve years. “Grandine il Vento” was recorded at Studio X in Ridgewood NJ, USA. All the music on the new album except for one track was composed and arranged by Dunford and features him on acoustic guitars and backing vocals.

Michael Dunford is survived by his wife Clare, two sons William (13) and Oliver (10), and sister Judy Kendall. Services will be held at Woking Crematorium at a date to be announced.

RIVERSIDE to Release New Album “Shrine Of New Generation Slaves” on February 5, 2013

November 19, 2012 By NJProghouse

November 16, 2012 (Los Angeles, CA) — Poland’s progressive rockers RIVERSIDE have just completed their fifth studio album, SHRINE OF NEW GENERATION SLAVES, and are proud to announce the effort will see a North American release on February 5, 2013.   Out on longtime record label InsideOut Music, the album will also be available in Europe on January 21, 2013.

Vocalist Mariusz explains, “In 2012 we’ve been focusing on the work on the new album, and trying to prove, mostly to ourselves, that we can still surprise with something, and what’s most important – create an album that would become our showpiece, music-wise and lyrics-wise.  The title might sound a bit intricate, but the acronym will definitely explain what we did with our music this time.”

Fans can read about the album’s recording process on the band’s blog here, and a video interview that was done with RIVERSIDE directly from the studio can be seen here.

SHRINE OF NEW GENERATION SLAVES is the follow up to the band’s 2009 release, Anno Domini High Definition, which entered the Poland charts at #1 and has since hit gold album status.  In 2011, RIVERSIDE also released an EP titled Memories In My Head to celebrate the band’s 10th anniversary.

Help local NYC band JOLLY Recover From Hurricane Sandy

November 15, 2012 By NJProghouse

Our good friends from NYC, and “future” NJP alumni JOLLY suffered a devastating loss brought forth by the destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy.

In September 2012, we were fortunate enough to secure the biggest opportunity of our career to date; a spring 2013 tour opening for Riverside to promote our upcoming album, “The Audio Guide To Happiness (Part 2).”

On October 29th, 2012, Hurricane Sandy brought major flooding to Rockaway Park, destroying our drummer Louis’ home, which also functioned as JOLLY’s practice space and recording studio. Despite efforts to elevate valuables and board up windows, the storm surge exceeded all expectations, busting through the boarded windows and ripping through our headquarters, completely destroying most of our equipment and Louis’ personal possessions. A majority of what we used to make our music was violently tossed around and left covered in sewage water, mud, sand, and garbage.

We’re looking to rebuild and get new gear to continue making music for all of you, the incredible people who have always been the foundation of JOLLY.   In order to make this album and tour possible, we are calling on you, our fans and friends, to help us with this effort. [CONTINUE READING]

Hurry Up and Smell the Roses, the debut solo album from Tom Brislin, released on October 30

November 2, 2012 By NJProghouse

Tom Brislin: Hurry Up and Smell the Roses (2012)

Keyboardist, vocalist, and songwriter Tom Brislin, known for his work with notable artists spanning a variety of genres and generations, releases his debut solo album, Hurry Up and Smell the Roses on Tuesday, October 30, 2012.

Brislin’s piano-driven music is described as “Cinematic Pop”, and is flanked by orchestral and electronic flavors throughout Hurry Up and Smell the Roses. The album features 11 original tracks, including “Your Favorite Day” and “Stuff You Would Understand”.

A New Jersey native, Brislin embarked on a musical path as both a songwriting artist and session keyboardist. He gained visibility through a string of demanding tours with iconic artists including Meat Loaf, Yes, Debbie Harry, and many others.

“It was a thrill to play music with these artists I grew up hearing,” said Brislin. “Even though my own music is something quite different, it was an education like no other.” Brislin has drawn comparisons to vocalists including Sufjan Stevens, Gotye, Elliot Smith, and Ben Folds.

Brislin wrote, produced, performed and recorded Hurry Up and Smell the Roses independently. The album features guest contributions from guitarist and platinum songwriter Clint Lagerberg, vocalist Annie Haslam of Renaissance, and Theremin synthesist Shueh-li Ong. The release was made possible with the help of direct fan-funding through Kickstarter.com. Fans offered pledges in exchange for a variety of rewards including house concerts, limited-edition merchandise, and customized recordings of cover songs by request.

“Fan-funding sites like Kickstarter have been in the news a lot recently,” Brislin points out. “In my case, the platform allowed me to create an album without compromise, while simultaneously forging stronger bonds with those who care deeply about the music and support what I do.”

Brislin’s songwriting first emerged in the synth-rock band Spiraling, who toured with groups including They Might Be Giants and OK Go. Following the group’s breakup, Tom relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, to write and record for the first time as a solo artist.

The Star-Ledger (NJ) described Brislin as “a warm vocalist and a sincere, introspective lyricist.”

Brislin will showcase material from Hurry Up and Smell the Roses in Nashville and New York starting in November. Plans for a national tour will be announced in the coming weeks.
